NYX Total Control Drop Foundation is one of those Insta-famous foundations as it comes with a dropper which lets you drop the foundation directly onto the face. NYX recently extended the shade range of this foundation in India and now it’s available in 25 shades. (30 shades overall, 25 in India) Major props to NYX for having an actual gradient in their shade range where the shades go from extremely light to extremely deep. Let’s see how this foundation performs on my oily skin.
What the brand says: Customize your coverage like a pro with our Total Control Drop Foundation! Now available in six more shades to accommodate an even wider range of skin tones, this fan-favorite foundation provides sheer-to-full coverage and a soft matte finish. Use the included glass dropper to fine-tune this velvety-matte formula to your heart’s desire.

Shade: 15 Caramel. This shade has a warm undertone and matches me perfectly. It will suit tan skin tones with an olive or warm undertone. For shade reference I am NC 44 in MAC Studio Fix Fluid. You can check out my other Foundation shade matches here.
Packaging: The NYX Total Control Drop foundation comes in a frosted glass bottle with an external black box. The usage instructions given on the box state that 2+ drops are required for a sheer coverage, 3+ for a medium and 4+ drops for a full coverage. (It’s essential to know that ‘drop’ does not refer to just one tiny drop of the foundation. It means one full squeeze/load of the dropper.) The bottle is very tiny as compared to my other foundations. It comes with a dropper which has a black rubber top which screws on tightly and makes the foundation travel friendly.
Texture: This foundation has an extremely thin, almost water-like consistency. It is so runny that if I take some foundation out on the back of my hand, I really need to balance it, otherwise it would slide down.
Application & Coverage: I started out with a clean, moisturised face and took out two drops at the back of my hand (didn’t have the guts to put it directly on the face :p). I dotted it all over my face and began blending it out with a beauty sponge. As the foundation was too thin, almost all of it was being absorbed by the sponge leaving a very sheer coverage. I decided to switch to a face brush (I used the Real Techniques Expert Face Brush) for a better coverage. The foundation blended out well on my skin and the brush brush did not cause any streaking or patchiness. Those 2 drops gave me a nice, skin-like sheer coverage, but I could still see my redness and acne marks so decided to build up the foundation to a medium-full coverage.
It took me around 4-5 drops to achieve a medium-full coverage but the surprising thing about this foundation was that it did not feel cakey AT ALL. As the consistency is very thin, it was almost like blending water on my face! It smoothed out my skin and filled in my pores to some extent without accentuating them. It ended up covering my redness and acne scars well. The NYX Total Control Drop Foundation did not feel heavy on the skin at all. It set to a natural, velvet matte finish.
Flashback: This foundation passed the photo flash test and gave almost little to no flashback. I tested it out by clicking a flash photo in low lighting from my phone as well as my camera. This foundation actually photographed really well. Let me know in the comments below if you would like to see flash photos included in my posts 🙂
Staying Power: I used the Laura Mercier Translucent setting powder to set this foundation all over my face. The foundation stayed fresh for about 4-5 hours after application after which my nose started getting really oily. After about 6 hours I noticed that my face was pretty shiny especially around my forehead and cheeks. As my mouth area was slightly on the drier side before application, it remained intact without any breaking apart. The foundation also started settling into the fine lines a little but did not crease much. The oiliness was easily blotted away with a blotting paper and I applied a light layer of the powder again. This gave me an extended wear time of about 2-3 hours.
My Overall Experience:
I liked the NYX Total Drop Foundation for its texture and finish on the skin. It gave me a very skin like finish and did not make me look cakey at all. However, it did not last that well on my oily skin. I wouldn’t use this for days when I have to make my foundation stay for over 5 hours without any touch up. In my opinion it is a perfect foundation for someone with combination skin. But if you have an excessively oily skin like mine, then you can give it a pass as you can find more long lasting foundations for a cheaper price. However, I will continue to use this foundation as an everyday foundation because of the way it photographs and makes the skin look!
