Lakmé 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Mousse Lip & Cheek Colour + Swatches on Brown Skin

Lakmé 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Mousse Lip & Cheek Colour + Swatches on Brown Skin

What the brand says: Lakmé’s first-ever lip colour in a mousse texture is super weightless and can be used as a cheek tint too. Available in 20 intense and vibrant shades, they last longer and have a powdery matte finish. It’s 2 in 1 formula makes it an instant everyday favourite for the modern Indian woman of today.

  • Give your lips a powdery matte look. Swipe on with the easy-to-use foam tip applicator and apply a second coat to deepen the shade.
  • Add a soft blush to your cheeks. Dot the mousse under your cheekbones in a half-moon shape, then use your fingertips to blend.

Price & Availability: The Lakmé Weightless Mousse Lipstick is priced at ₹625 for 9 ml. The price is decent for a drugstore brand and Lakmé does have cheaper/pricier options. So this is somewhere in the middle of their lipstick range. It is available online on the Lakme website, Nykaa, Amazon, Myntra, Purplle and other online retailers as well. Offline, it can be found at all Lakmé counters in various Lifestyle & Shoppers’ Stop stores across India. You can usually find these lipsticks at a discount of at least 20% – 30%.

Packaging:  These Lakme lippies come in a rectangle shaped box. The outer packaging of the lipsticks has a pretty rose gold finish and contains product information such as price, colour, how to apply etc. The lipsticks themselves come in a pinkish-nude bottle with a reflective rose gold cap. The cap screws on securely and minimizes any chance of the lipstick opening up on its own. All the shades have the same packaging and are not colour coded. So if you have multiple shades, you will have to check the bottom to make sure that you’re picking up the correct shade.

Shade: Lakme currently has 20 shades in this range for a variety of skin tones. The shades consist of various nudes, pinks, reds, corals and plums. I will be swatching 3 of the existing shades – Coffee Lite, Rose Touch & Crimson Silk. I’ve used and loved Coffee Lite since over a year now and the latter two were sent to me by Nykaa and Lakme for review purposes.

Top to bottom – Rose Touch, Crimson Silk and Coffee Lite

As this lipstick can be used in multiple ways, I have applied all the shades as lipsticks, cream blush and cream eyeshadow in the pictures below. For shade reference, I’m NC 44 in MAC Studio Fix Fluid and 332 Golden Caramel in Maybelline Fit Me Foundation.

Coffee Lite – This is a mauve shade with hints of purple and grey in it. This shade has been one of my favourites for the longest time and I’ve also repurchased this 🙂 It looks a little ashy as a blush on tan skin but works well as a cream eyeshadow. This shade will work well as a lipstick for fair – tan skin tones, however it may look a little muddy on people with deeper skin tones.

Rose Touch – This is also a mauve shade but it definitely pulls more pink on me. This shade looks beautiful on my complexion and will suit all skin tones especially brown/tan skin. This gorgeous pink doesn’t wash me out and is great for both day and night time looks. This shade applies really well as a blush on my skin as well and gives a natural flush of colour.

Crimson Silk – This is a blue based bright red shade which will suit all skin tones. However, I’m not sure I like it as much on me. I’ve never been a fan of cool red tones as I feel it clashes with my warm undertone quite a bit and somehow makes my lips appear thinner than they are. But this works excellent as a blush and will look nice with monotone/neutral looks.

Application & Texture: The Lakmé 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Lipsticks have a teardrop applicator with a hole in the middle which holds a lot of product. The wand is long and the application is pretty easy. The tip on the teardrop is very helpful for lining the lips first and gives a precise application. The deeper shades require just one coat for an opaque application but other shades require at least 2 coats for an even application.

The texture of these lipsticks is rightly described as a weightless mousse. They’re not liquid-y but have a creamy mousse like consistency which feels very light on the lips. They dry to a matte (more velvet matte than complete matte) without changing colour and feel extremely comfortable and non-drying on the lips. The lipsticks have a sweet vanilla-y scent to them so if you get easily irritated with frangrances, please consider this before buying.

On the cheeks and eyelids, they blend very easily just like a cream blush or a cream eyeshaow. You can blend them with your fingers or with a damp beauty sponge. (Be sure not to put extremely pink or dark colours on the lid area, might make you look like you have a pink eye)

Staying Power: The Lakmé 9 to 5 Weightless Matte Mousse Lip & Cheek Colour stays on the lips for 6-7 hours easily even after light snacking. They’re a little creamy and will transfer if you’re eating/drinking something. With heavy eating (oily foods, burgers, sanwiches etc.), they will fade away from the lips. However, the fade out is very even and does not leave the lipstick looking too patchy. Reapplication of the lipsticks is extremely easy.

On the cheeks, they lasted for a good 4-5 hours before slight fading. They creased on my eyelids in about 30 mins especially because I have hooded eyes, so I feel it would be better to set them with a powder on hooded/oily eyelids. These also make an excellent base for any powder blush/eyeshadow and increasing their vibrancy and longevity.

My Overall Experience:

After using this lipstick for more than a year, I believe it’s an excellent choice for someone who is looking for a lipstick formula which is a mix of a liquid lipstick and a bullet lipstick. It’s extremely comfortable, lasts decently well and makes for an amazing cream blush too.

It’s a perfect on-the-go product so all college going people, beginners, or people who want a no-fuss, minimal makeup routine can opt for this. The extensive shade range is an added bonus as I feel everyone can find a shade they’re looking for. But the ₹695 price tag can be slightly steep for a Lakme lipstick, so it’s best to keep this product added in your cart/wish list and wait for a sale! I’m sure you can get it on a discount easily 🙂

Pros Cons
• Extremely Comfortable  • Costlier than most drugstore lipsticks
• 3 in 1 functionality  • Creases easily on oily/hooded eyelids
• Lasts long on the lips
• Easy availability
• Good shade range
