I’ve been interested in these Mini Huda Palettes ever since they launched but never got a chance to get my hands on them. So when Huda launched these on Nykaa last month, I instantly grabbed the Smokey Obsessions Palette. I had my eyes on this particular one from the longest time and that silver shade looked really fancy. It also seemed to be the perfect palette for the upcoming festive season. So here’s my review on the Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette.
What the brand says: Each Huda Beauty Obsessions Eyeshadow Palette is packed with a selection of 9 highly pigmented mattes and striking shimmers to create versatile and timeless looks. Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions: This range of 4 mattes and 5 shimmers is perfect for mastering a smokey neutral look. An intense black, warm shades of dark brown, taupe, champagne, gold and silver give you a spectrum of colours for a vast array of looks.
Price & Availability: The Huda Beauty Obsessions Palettes cost ₹2495 in India. There are 9 eyeshadows of 1.1 gms each (More product than a normal eyeshadow pan). Huda Beauty products are only available with Nykaa in India. You can either get them online or in select offline Nykaa stores which carry Huda Beauty.
Packaging: The Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette comes in a stunning matte black flip to open packaging with an outer transparent sleeve. The packaging has a magnetic closure and feels very sturdy. The front of the palette has the brand logo and a photo depicting of each shade of the palette and the back of the palette has the usual info such a ingredients, weight, quantity etc. The palette is quite small and is almost the same size as the palm of my hand. The palette has a magnetic closure which helps in keeping it accident proof as well. The inside of the palette has a mirror (it’s a pretty good mirror) and the shades. We can see that no space is wasted in between the shadows on the inside which helps make the palette compact. Also, there are no shade names in any of the Huda Beauty Obsessions palettes.
I really like this packaging as it is very travel friendly, does not feel cheap and is not prone to getting dirty easily.
Shades: This Huda Beauty Obessesions palette has 9 gorgeous shades – 4 mattes and 5 shimmers. The shades in this palette are perfect for a neutral or a smokey look. The 4 mattes are – an intense black, a light brown and 2 dark brown shades which have different undertones. I feel they could have done away with one of the dark browns and included a medium matte brown in its place.
As for the shimmers, you have your basic neutral shimmers – a warm gold, a deep bronze, a light pinkish bronze, a silver and a light copper.
Texture: The matte eyeshadows in the Smokey Obsessions palette felt extremely buttery and swatched well. I was specifically impressed with the black shade. It was insanely pigmented, and felt like velvet when touched. The shimmers in this Huda Beauty Palette are par excellence as well. They felt like foiled eyeshadows and had great pigment. The only shade I had a slight problem with was the silver shade. It felt a little chunky and I had to go back in the shade a couple of times to get a good swatch.
Performance: I really liked the performance of this palette. The matte shadows applied well and blended easily. The black shade went on a bit patchy on the eyes and needed a little building up but otherwise it blended well. I tried to apply the light brown shade as my transition shade but it hardly showed up on my eyelids. I had to build it up to get a slight colour, but the problem was the colour and not the formula of the shadow. It can however be used to set the eye base (eye primer or concealer) as it is the same shade as my eyelids. I had no problems applying and blending the deeper browns. The matte shadows weren’t very powdery and did not have any fallout.
As you can see in the picture above, I would have really loved medium brown eyeshadow which could have acted as a crease/transition shade for deeper skin tones.
The shimmer shades picked up well with a brush except the silver shade (we’ll get to that in a bit), but I prefer packing on the shimmers with my finger for an intense pigment. You can even use a damp brush for the same effect. They did not seem chunky on the eyelid and gave a smooth finish with little to no fallout. The silver shade hardly picked up with a dry brush. It went on fine with a finger, though it needed a few swipes to get a good payoff. It also had more fallout as compared to the rest of the shimmers.
For my eye shadow base, I applied the Milani Eyeshadow Primer and set it with a loose powder. I applied the eyeshadows on top of it and the eye shadow looked really good even after 8 hours. The shimmers started fading a bit after the 8 hour mark but it did not hamper the overall look that much.
The Huda Beauty Smokey Obsessions Palette is the perfect travel palette in my opinion. It is compact, has really nice shades, and the shadows perform well on the eyes. The only thing missing from this palette was a medium warm brown shade in my opinion. It would have been a 5/5 palette for me if there was a transition shade for deeper skin tones. The light brown shade is a beautiful transition shade for light to medium skin tones. I still feel they could have switched one of the darker brown shades with a medium brown.
In spite of that, I would highly recommend this palette for anyone looking to test out HUDA Eyeshadows or looking to grab a high end neutral palette but don’t know where to start. The price is definitely on the expensive side but Huda Beauty is considered to be a luxurious brand in the Indian market. You definitely pay for the packaging, the quality and the quantity.
The smokey obsessions palette surely won’t disappoint you.
